As a musician myself, turning sheet music is the bane of my art. Ok I confess. I haven’t touched a musical instrument since the 11th grade but I did play for almost 8 years so there! Back to the subject at hand, the CLEF system consists of a flexible LCD touch screen with a built-in stand and a wireless foot pedal.

Use the pedal to turn digital sheet music or just touch the screen. It also throws in some computer functions by allowing on the fly scoring, note taking, and collaborative writing. When you need a real computer, a keyboard slides out from underneath the screen and use the foot pedal as a stereo to enjoy the music you just played.

Serero Architects and his redesign Eiffel Tower Project

Paris-based Serero Architects have claimed victory in the open competition to redesign any of the Eiffel Tower's public reception and access areas.. The project will extend the top floor plate of the tower by grafting a high performance carbon Kevlar structure on it. The structure will be temporarily bolted to the slab without requiring any modification of the existing structure. It will expand the usable floor area from 280 m2 to 580m2. I wonder what parisians will think?

Sony’s NWZ-a726 Super Slim Video Walkman in Pink or Black

Sony recently announced a whole slew of new media players, we were especially fond of the NWZ-a726 Walkman that sports a 2.4″ LCD and a claimed 15 hour battery life. But what we originally missed, is that the Walkman will be available in several colors including pink or black. Kudos to Sony for being one of the most color friendly companies out there. The pink version of Walkman will be available in 8GB or 4GB capacities for $199 and $149 respectively and will be compatible with Windows DRM services. Overall, between the color options, its lightweight 2.1 oz weight and 2 1/8″ thick body, we are definitely liking what we see.

The Canvas PC

Designer Kyle Cherry has envisaged a new type of computer with creatives in mind. Called simply “Canvas”, the computer is designed to increase the quality and productivity of the designer or artist. It is intended to allow a user with little or no experience to make the switch from traditional to digital workflows by building the system around a more familiar interface. This concept should even make Wacom Clinq owners jealous. via Yanko Design

Metamophing Computer Interfaces

Siafu is a PC designed to give people with vision loss or impairment a more intuitive computer experience. It lays flat like a tablet and allows the user to fully interact with it by way of touch. The surface utilizes a conceptual material called magneclay or magnetized liquid. This material has the ability to morph upward into any shape via a controlled electromagnetic field enabling the device to create a braille surface for reading and even pictures in 3D relief.

The technology behind Siafu - Magneclay, is an oil based synthetic agent that possesses limitless morphing capabilities. It has a loose molecular structure but can be infinitely rearranged when acted upon by electrical and magnetic charges. As long as the charges acting upon it remain stable, the magneclay will hold its structural rigidity, allowing it to be touched without deformation.

As for why the device is named after an aggressive African ant? Beats me.

Siafu’s magneclay surface can generate full spread braill layouts, allowing users to enjoy reading digital content in a large book style relief. The surface of Siafu can form a working 9-button braille keyboard. The braille output allows the user to conveniently review what they just typed.Siaufu also possesses a built-in microphone, which provides an alternative to typing. Its high performance voice recognition software allows the user to simply speak into the mic, and the words are instantly processed into on screen braille relief.
Siafu has the ability to display screen images such as web pages in a bas relief. It can even go one step further and convert all the active text on the screen into translated braille relief.
Siafu utilizes 2-D to 3-D image conversion technology to process screen images. It then generates a 3-Dimensional digital wire frame which is then process through electrical currents into the magneclay. The end result is a highly accurate 3-Dimensional representation of the image.
